Volunteers thanked at celebration of volunteering

Volunteers involved in supporting the local community were thanked by Knutsford Town Council at a volunteer appreciation event on Wednesday 28th January at Knutsford Market Hall.

The event brought together members of the local community to recognise and celebrate the valuable contributions of volunteers.

The event welcomed over 50 volunteers and was designed to highlight the dedication and positive impact of volunteers working across the local area. Guests included community members and volunteers, with Town Mayor Cllr Bryan Hartley thanking volunteers for their continued commitment, noting the difference their time and effort make to individuals and organisations alike. Bryan shared insights from his time in office on the importance of volunteering and its role in strengthening local communities.

Jeanette Hine, Knutsford Town Council’s Corporate Support Manager, said “This event was about showing our appreciation for everyone involved with volunteering and an opportunity to thank all those who selflessly support others and the council activity throughout the year”.

The event concluded with informal networking, allowing attendees to connect, share experiences, and celebrate the spirit of volunteering within the community.

Margaret Hacking, Chairman of Knutsford Talking Newspaper said “Many thanks to everyone at the Town Council who organised and worked so hard at the event last night.  What a nice idea to have all the volunteer and community groups together.  It was lovely, thank you”.

Bridget Knight from Knutsford Hosts said “I just wanted to thank the Town Mayor and Town Council for such a pleasant evening for Knutsford volunteers. It was a lovely opportunity to meet others and chat!”

Volunteers sought for memories project

Knutsford Town Council is starting an exciting short project to create a documentary style film telling the story of Knutsford during World War II and is calling for volunteers to take part.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund funded project ‘Memories of World War II’ was originally planned for 2020 to mark the 75th anniversary of the end of the conflict. The project, which will see the council working closely with Knutsford Heritage Centre, aims to record the memories of those who remember Knutsford during the late 1930s/1940s.

The Town Council is first looking to recruit a team of volunteers to lead the interviews. The volunteers will firstly be given training in oral history interviews by Dr Michaela Hulme, an award-winning historian and lecturer in public history at the University of Birmingham who just happens to have previously lived next door to the late Knutsford historian Joan Leach.

The three-hour training session will be delivered on Saturday 9th October at 1pm and help the volunteers understand memory, the oral history process and how to conduct effective interviews.

With the ongoing support of Michaela, the volunteers will then be assigned to conduct interviews with those who come forward to share their memories. Each interview will capture part of Knutsford’s history and form a learning and research resource for future generations. Interviews will then be edited into a 1-hour film that weaves together a story of life during around the time of the war.

“This project looks to ensure that what is currently just in living memory is captured and preserved for future generations” said Town Clerk Adam Keppel-Green. “It’s about recording the stories, the memories of the sights and sounds and adding to the rich tapestry of the town’s social history”

The Town Council is also appealing for anyone who would like to be interviewed as part of the project. Milestone in Tree Mapping Project

A milestone has been reached by volunteers working to promote trees in Knutsford as part of the Town Council’s Nature Action Plan as they complete a census of all trees on public land.

The volunteers, led by Malcolm Thomas and Kevin Griffiths seek to raise awareness across the town and to encourage tree maintenance and planting. They believe that trees give our neighbourhood life, colour and beauty, clean our air, protect us from extreme weather and provide habitats for wildlife.

With support from the Town Council, the volunteers are carrying out a census of mature trees. So far, they have tagged, recorded and mapped 940 street trees. Whilst they had previously estimated from aerial images that there were 8000 such trees in Knutsford their work has established that most trees in Knutsford are on privately owned land, including schools, sports clubs, businesses and house gardens.

Currently, the group is extending the census to community woods, including College Wood, St John’s Wood and The Heath, in collaboration with Friends groups and local residents.

To complete the census, the group is appealing to the local community for help, asking community groups and businesses to share information about trees on their land. Volunteers are available to help landowners undertake the tree census and provide guidance on the project. The group are also welcoming new volunteers to assist with the project.
