Knutsford is supporting parents and carers with their choice of feeding their babies and toddlers. Whatever feeding method chosen, it is important that parents and carers are made to feel welcome and supported when feeding in public. Although breastfeeding in public is protected by law and a mother cannot be removed from a premises for feeding, there is ignorance from the public. With bottle feeding, it can often be a practical issue – juggling heating the bottle and a crying baby. It has also been noted that some mums have been publicly shamed for not choosing the natural feeding route.

The agreement states that the organisation will ensure that:

  • Breastfeeding or bottle feeding is welcome in any public area of its venue.
  • A parent/carer who is breastfeeding or bottle feeding will not be asked to move or to stop feeding.
  • The Knutsford Feeding Charter window sticker will be displayed at all times
  • Staff are aware of the scheme and how to be supportive to the needs of breastfeeding and bottle-feeding parents/carers.
  • A ‘baby feeding welcome’ is included in customer care procedures and polices where appropriate, and guidance is available for staff on how to effectively respond to a potential complaint about breastfeeding (or bottle feeding) from another customer.
  • A private area may be made available if needed and if space allows.

The organisation is under no obligation to offer free drinks, apart from a glass of water. Hospitality venues are encouraged to offer a table service to parents/carers where possible.
