Front Garden Competition winners are announced

Green-fingered Knutsford residents showed even the smallest of gardens can impress the judges during Knutsford Town Council’s annual front garden competition.

All shapes and sizes of garden were entered into the community contest, judged by the Deputy Mayor of Knutsford, Cllr Stewart Gardiner and Christine Skinner representing Knutsford in Bloom.

With a cherry tree in full fruit, beautiful hanging baskets, lighting, bird feeders and baths and a small seating area, judges were in complete agreement that Peter Holt’s garden in Middle Walk was the winning entry and he received a certificate and a gift voucher for a Christmas Tree kindly donated by Fryers Garden Centre.

A strong second place went to Terence and Jean Austin’s garden in Meadow Drive – a beautiful garden with well tended flowers and a lush green lawn.

Third place was a tie between two very different front gardens: Jacqui Elliott, who’s small but perfectly formed paved garden on George Street impressed the judges with a variety of potted plants, climbers and a window box and Lorraine Dorset’s beautiful garden on Woodside featured abundant flowering beds and a well-tended lawn.

The Residents of Ella Grove were presented with a Community Garden certificate to acknowledge their maintenance and upkeep of this communal space for the enjoyment of all local residents.

Cllr Andrew Malloy, Mayor of Knutsford said, ‘’I was delighted to hand out certificates to some worthy winners this weekend and see the gardens they’ve clearly spent a lot of time nurturing over many months.  Thanks also to Jonathan Farber for taking photographs of the gardens, across the town, and to Cllr Stewart Gardiner for assisting in judging the competition while I was on holiday.”

Knutsford Town Council look forward to receiving even more entries for next year’s competition in the Summer of 2020.

Front Garden Competition

Knutsford is already blooming with the RHS Tatton Flower Show in town, floral shop window displays plus an upcoming visit from the Northwest In Bloom Competition judges, and now Knutsford Town Council is inviting residents to get involved by nominating gardens for the 2019 Knutsford Front Garden Competition.

The competition, organised by the council in 2019, encourages residents to get involved with the In Bloom campaign and either show off their own beautiful front gardens or maybe nominate a neighbour.

The competition is open to any garden which is on view to members of the public, and anything can be nominated from window boxes to large landscaped gardens. Residents are encouraged to snap a photo of their favourite Knutsford front gardens and enter them into the competition by emailing the picture to the council. Residents can nominate their own gardens, a neighbour’s garden or a garden that they have passed on their travels.

The competition has once again been sponsored by Fryers Garden Centre on Manchester Road who will be providing prizes for the three winners. The competition will be judged by the Town Mayor with representatives from Knutsford in Bloom and Fryers.

“Whether you’re proud of your own garden or think your neighbour’s efforts have been paying off all you need to do is send us a picture to enter it – it’s a fun, local competition focused on recognising the spaces that brighten people’s days” said Town Clerk, Adam Keppel-Green.

The competition opened on Monday 15th July and will be open for one month until Friday 16th August. To enter just send a photograph and the address of the garden to alex.brown@knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk. You can enter as many gardens as you’d like, and can also submit entries in person to the Council Offices on Toft Road.

Gold Award winning Knutsford in Bloom seeks new volunteers

Knutsford has won the sought-after Gold Award in the North West in Bloom competition for the third year running. Volunteers from Knutsford in Bloom worked in partnership with the Town Council to provide stunning displays around the town.

Knutsford in Bloom is a volunteer group established in 2009 which is made up of 10 dedicated members. The success of this year’s entry is even more impressive given the long drought that preceded the judging day in July this year.

The group is now looking for new members to join, offering opportunities to be involved in larger projects such as planting a wildflower meadow as well as the opportunity to work on displays in prominent town centre locations.

Sam Youd, member of the group and former Head Gardener at Tatton Park, is particularly keen to see younger people involved in the projects, inviting interest from local schools and youth groups such as the Scouts and Guides.

Cllr James Power, Chairman of the Town Council Environment Committee said “A massive thank you to the incredible volunteers who have won gold again for Knutsford. I would encourage anyone who is interested in joining Knutsford in bloom to get in touch”

If you or your group would like to know more about how you could be involved, contact the Town Council to register your interest in taking part on 01565 653929 or email townclerk@knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk

This year Knutsford in Bloom tried a new approach for the Front Garden competition, with friends and neighbours nominating their favourite gardens. “We wanted to acknowledge some of the lovely front gardens in Knutsford that had not previously entered. We asked members to spread the word and take a snap of front gardens making an impact in Knutsford” said Yvonne.

The group received so many nominations that members had to sift the photos to compile a top ten. The top ten gardens were then visited and judged by Cllr Nicholson, KiB Deputy Chairman Mary Johnson and Doug Christie, grounds team leader for ANSA.

The winners were:

1st place – Mrs Loretta Crabtree, Blackhill Lane

2nd place – Mr Graeme Webster, Branden Drive

3rd place – Mrs Jackie Edwards, Grove Park

“These are always of an excellent standard and make Knutsford look so inviting year round” Yvonne commented as the judges headed into the Town Centre to look at the efforts of the Knutsford business community. Across five categories fifteen businesses received an award for their contribution to Knutsford’s floriculture. Knutsford in Bloom have praised the business community for going ‘above and beyond’ year after year and thanked the traders who took time to create a display.
