Discover Knutsford Shortlisted for ATCM Awards!

Discover Knutsford, the innovative place brand and website developed by Knutsford Town Council, has been shortlisted for a Best Marketing and Branding Scheme at the upcoming Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) awards. This significant recognition highlights the success of a project funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

The Discover Knutsford initiative involved a two-pronged marketing approach, harnessing local talent to capture the town’s unique charm. Bella Marketing and Design were instrumental in developing the distinct ‘place brand,’ while McClaren Jones Marketing brought the vision to life with a comprehensive destination website

Sandra Curties, Town Centre Manager, said. “Developing a place brand and visitor website had been a long-term aim of the council and we were delighted that the Shared Prosperity Fund made this possible. Working with two local agencies ensured the character of our town was perfectly captured to attract both visitors and residents. We are delighted to be shortlisted for these prestigious awards.”

Bella Marketing and Design led the creation of the Discover Knutsford brand. Tessa Blakemore, Creative Director at Bella Marketing and Design, commented, “Our creative studio really enjoyed working with the team at Knutsford Town Council to create the new brand identity. Our designers produced a contemporary, stylish brand which takes inspiration from the traditional architectural features and colour palette of the environment. It was important to respect the heritage whilst positioning Knutsford as a forward-thinking, multi-faceted place to visit. The emblem of the archway invites visitors to look beyond the obvious and discover everything our vibrant town has to offer.”

This new brand is now consistently applied across all marketing collateral, including a comprehensive branding guide that informs social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube), leaflets, posters, banners, and a full suite of exhibition materials.

Sandra Curties continued, “The exhibition collateral has proved extremely helpful when attending events such as the Cheshire Show, Knutsford Christmas Markets, and the RHS. It created a visual impact for our information hub, enabling people to find out about our town. In addition, events such as Flash Fashion, Knutsford Music Festival, and Wellness Week are now unified under this umbrella brand, helping to create a consistent identity for the town.”

Leveraging the new branding guide, McClaren Jones Marketing developed the user-friendly “Discover Knutsford” website. Anita Jones, Managing Director at McClaren Jones Marketing, shared, “Developing the destination website for Knutsford was a truly special project for our team. Not only was it our inaugural collaboration with the council, but it was also a chance to build something impactful for our very own local town. The site is now the definitive resource for residents, visitors, and businesses, comprehensively showcasing Knutsford’s many attractions and inviting people to ‘take a closer look.’’

The winners will be announced in awards ceremony in Bradford on Wednesday 18th June.

The website can be viewed via  www.discoverknutsford.com and is complemented by Discover Knutsford’s growing presence on social media where regular updates and inspiration are shared with the community. Visitors are encouraged to follow @discoverknutsford on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news and features.

60 King Street with Bunting

Update on 60 King Street

The Town Council continues to be in discussions with major property company Bruntwood to secure investment for the iconic 60 King Street and bring it back into use.

Following investigations over the past 24 months, Bruntwood has determined that a scheme where the council retains the freehold of the building and secures third party investment for a commercial use of the whole building is not financially viable due to the level of investment required balanced with the potential income it would generate.

In March, the Town Council and Bruntwood agreed to explore an alternative option where the upper floors would be converted to residential use with the ground floor restored to a commercial use. This would secure the future of the building and bring the ground floor back into active use in the town centre.

Bruntwood has commissioned a detailed structural survey to inform these discussions and has liaised with potential development partners. The survey will be completed by the end of June and the viability of this option should be determined over the summer.

We know this is not as detailed an update as many would like to see. 60 King Street is a complicated building. It requires significant investment and in increasingly challenging economic times, this greatly limits the opportunities for the building. The Town Council will issue a further update following the next meeting of its Assets and Operations Committee on 30th June.

Queen Elizabeth Coronation Tree Rededicated

A tree planted in 1953 to mark the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II has been rededicated to her memory on the 72nd anniversary of her coronation, 2nd June.

The Heath in the 1950s was different to how it is now. Throughout the early 1940s it was home to American troops and the site had few trees, making the tree a prominent sight. Over the years, the woodland section of the Heath developed and more oak trees began to grow, possibly seeded from the Queen’s Oak itself. Holly also became widespread and eventually obscured the tree from view, and as a result it had been forgotten.

The tree was rediscovered in October 2021 by Rob Eyre, who was surveying tree to catalogue the trees in public spaces for the Town Council. Rob found a tree surrounding by six-foot iron railings and surrounded by holly, but at the time no-one was sure what it was for other than that it appeared to be a memorial tree.

The mystery was solved two years later by volunteer researchers Jenny Collis and Mary Gracie of the Knutsford Heritage Centre who found the 1953 coronation programme in the Town Council’s archive. The programme stated that an oak tree would be planted along with a line of ash trees in Ladies Mile.

Pam Walker, Manager of Knutsford Heritage Centre said “’Knutsford Heritage Centre is delighted that, through research by two of the Centre’s volunteers, another small part of the town’s history has been re-discovered and restored”

With the mystery solved, Friends of the Heath and Cheshire Wildlife Trust, who manage the woodland on behalf of Tatton Estate, began clearing the area around the oak tree to make it visible once more. Friends of the Heath installed new posts around the tree.

Nick Johnson, Chair of Friends of the Heath said “We are thankful to the ‘Friends’ who gave their time, effort, and skills to restore this special Oak to the public gaze. May it thrive to remind us of our heritage and the dedication and work of one of our greatest monarchs”

On Monday 2nd June 2025, Town Mayor Cllr Bryan Hartley re-dedicated the tree to the late Queen. Speaking at a small gathering with Friends of the Heath, Knutsford Heritage Centre and Tatton Estates, Bryan paid tribute to the late Queen, saying “Today, as we unveil this new plaque, we rededicate the Queen’s Oak — in lasting memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II whose reign was defined by duty, dignity, and a deep connection with the people of this country”

“We hope this tree continues to stand not only as a marker of that historic Coronation, but as a living symbol of continuity, community, and the strength of nature and memory combined”.

Planting an oak on the heath to commemorate the coronation of the new monarch was a tradition at least dating back to King Edward VII when a tree was planted at the Manchester Road side. The trees for Kings George V and George VI have been lost, and a tree was planted to mark the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

Henry Brooks of Tatton Estates said “It was a delight to be able to see the Coronation Oak today for the unveiling of the plaque, thanks for the research work from Knutsford Heritage’s Volunteers and the clearing and fencing done by the Town Council, Friends of the Heath and Cheshire Wildlife Trust. The mayor’s speech was a poignant reminder of the life of service our late Monarch Queen Elizabeth II. I was honoured on behalf of the Estate to join our community in commemorating Her Majesty”

Pollinator photography competition launched

Knutsford Town Council, in collaboration with the Knutsford Photographic Society, is thrilled to announce the launch of a captivating photography competition as part of its 2025 focus on pollinators. This initiative aims to highlight the vital role of pollinating insects and encourage community engagement in efforts to reverse their decline.

The Bee Trail Photography Competition invites residents of all ages to capture the beauty and importance of pollinators in action. Participants are encouraged to submit striking photographs featuring at least one pollinator and one flower, showcasing the intricate relationship between these essential creatures and the flora they help thrive.

“We are pleased to be working with Knutsford Photographic Society to launch this competition, which celebrates the natural beauty around us but also serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of our pollinators” said Cllr April Johnson.

“Through the lens of the camera, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation for these insects and inspire actions that support their survival.”

To ensure broad participation, the competition features three categories:

  • Under 16s: Open to budding photographers 16 and under, using any device (phone or camera).
  • Ages 17+ (Phone): for those aged 17 and above, capturing the beauty with their phones.
  • Ages 17+ (Camera): for keen photographers aged 17 and above, using a camera to create captivating images.

Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each category. The winning photographs will be unveiled and celebrated during the Picnic in the Park event on September 14th.

Knutsford Town Council and the Knutsford Photographic Society look forward to seeing the incredible submissions that will undoubtedly emerge from this exciting new venture.

Further details on submission guidelines, deadlines, and specific entry procedures will be made available on the Knutsford Town Council website: https://www.knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk/bee-trail/photo-comp

Knutsford Town Council is leading a year of activity focused on supporting pollinator insects through its Nature Action Plan. This competition follows the launch of the Knutsford Bee Trail.

The Knutsford Photographic Society is a friendly, enthusiastic group of photographers who aim to have fun while not always taking themselves too seriously. They hold regular meetings and a number of club competitions throughout the year.

Cllr Bryan Hartley launches the Bee Trail

Knutsford Bee Trail Launched

The sun was shining on 17th May for the Knutsford Bee Day event which took place on the Moor.

The event was held to mark World Bee Day (20th May) and was the launch of a new walking trail across the town.

The Knutsford Bee Day event was organised by Knutsford Town Council as part of it’s Nature Action Plan. In 2025, the council aims to inspire residents to take action to support pollinating insects, including the UK’s most prolific pollinator, bees.

The day featured talks from pollinator experts, the launch of a summer photography competition and the opportunity to find out more about what simple actions we can all take to support pollinators.

Town Mayor, Cllr Bryan Hartley said “The atmosphere was as sweet as honey, and every guest I spoke with was absolutely buzzing with delight. It was a hive of activity, and the enthusiasm was truly contagious.”

The event was held to launch the Knutsford Bee Trail, a 3.5 mile walk connecting Knutsford’s wildlife sites, from the Heath to St John’s Wood.

“This trail is all about raising awareness of what we can all do to support pollinating insects which are vital to our ecosystem and our food supply,” said Cllr April Johnson, lead member of the town council’s Nature Action Plan.

The walk features a number of informative signs that highlight action being taken in the community, and things that can be implemented at home. The panels also highlight the importance of pollinators to the eco-system.

“There are so many practical things we can all do in our town to make a huge difference to wild bees and other pollinators. We want them to thrive here. We look forward to seeing you on the trail and together as a town pledging to do more to support our bees” April added.

Trail maps can be found online at www.knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk/bee-trail or picked up from local shops and the Council Offices. The Town Council website also features more detailed guidance on action that can be taken at home.

Cathryn Walley and Geraint Samuels from Friends of St John's Wood stood with Mayor Colin Banks with £626 cheque.

Local Groups Benefit from Community Grant Scheme

As part of the Knutsford Town Council Community Grant Scheme, we have awarded over £3,000 in grants to four local organisations that are actively supporting Knutsford by offering services to the community.

The first recipients of community grants in 2025 are the Knutsford Community First Responder Trust, Knutsford Scouts, Friends of St John’s Wood and Knutsford and District Talking Newspaper.

Knutsford Community First Responder Trust are a team of volunteers who run four local initiatives including teaching emergency life support skills and cardiac screening for young adults. This year they have been awarded £1,500 to fund new publicly accessible defibrillators, medical devices designed to restore the heartbeat in individuals experiencing cardiac arrest.

Peter Thompson, Chairman & CFR Lead shared “We at Knutsford Community First Responder Trust are delighted to continue our Partnership with the Town Council. Their continued support with this grant for replacement AEDs will contribute to keeping the people of Knutsford safe.”

The Knutsford Scouts are part of the UK’s biggest mixed youth organisation and help prepare young people with skills for life. The council is providing them with a new marquee worth £690 to use for events and activity.

Roger Turner, Scout Active Support Manager commented “Knutsford Scouts are delighted and grateful to be awarded a grant from the Knutsford Town Council’s Community Access Fund for a new marquee. The marquee will be an invaluable shared resource for all the Scout Groups in the Knutsford area and will be utilised extensively as a base for activities at Scout Camps and outdoor events as well as supporting local community events such as the Music Festival, all for the benefit of the young people of Knutsford.”

Friends of St John’s Wood have received £626 towards the provision of new information signs. The charity, which was established in 2020, works to improve the woodland and adjacent site of St. Helena’s Church.

The final grant of this round went to Knutsford and District Talking Newspaper, a self-funding weekly publication which supports individuals who are visually impaired. The charity has been awarded £350 towards the costs of redecorating their studio to provide a nicer environment for their volunteers to work in.

Chairman Margaret Hacking said, “On behalf of everyone at the Knutsford and District Talking Newspaper I would like to express our sincere thanks for the grant Knutsford Town Council provided, that has helped us give our studio a much-needed makeover.”

The Town Council’s small grants scheme aims to fund organisations and projects that provide improved services or opportunities that serve the local community. Knutsford Market Hall Unveils Stunning Refurbishment

The much-loved Knutsford Market Hall officially re-opened its doors on May 10th after a significant refurbishment, its first major upgrade since the 1980s.

The revitalised space, part funded by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund has created a brighter, warmer, and more inviting experience for traders, visitors, and residents.

Local contractor Built by Mode was contracted to deliver the programme of improvement works which included removing the old, suspended ceiling, levelling the floor and installing a new toilet, storeroom and kitchenette. All existing stall structures were removed and a new suite of permanent stalls created around the edge of the space, leaving the centre of the hall for pop-up traders and events.

Re-opening the market was one of the last duties carried out by outgoing Town Mayor, Cllr Colin Banks.  Colin said, “I was delighted to formally re-open the market hall. It was wonderful to see the traders in their new stalls and welcome both familiar and new faces back to the market. The market is now a much more welcoming space offering customers a varied shopping experience in the heart of our town. Please shop small and local.”

Sandra Curties, Town Centre Manager, said, “We are delighted that the market has re-opened and is now a warm more comfortable space for our traders and customers alike.  Over the coming months, we hope to host a number of additional pop-ups and events, and we urge everyone to visit the hall and discover what is new.”

The newly re-opened market hall welcomes new ventures such as Polka Bakery, Thai Kitchen and Cheshire Party Store. These have joined familiar faces such as The Market Café, Market Hall Barber, Slipped Discs, Market Hall Butcher and Deli, and Knutsford Mobile.

Cheshire Party Store is the new venture of Simon and Melanie Naylor of the Knutsford Art and Stationery Shop.

Sandra added “The Town Council is proud to provide the Market Hall as a space to support small businesses. By offering competitive rents, the market hall provides a valuable platform for businesses to grow without the high overheads of a high street location. We invite anyone interested in trading with us to get in touch.”

The central section of the market can also be hired by small businesses offering a variety of choice to the consumer. During the launch this space was utilised by Flower and Twine Co, The Kokedama Llama, A Passion for Learning, Made with Love by Lise, and Hot Cocoa. Hot Cocoa hopes to have regular pop-ups in the market hall pending her move to new premises on King Street. The hall can also be hired for events, community and interest groups outside of trading hours.

The Town Council is currently looking for a new fruit and veg stall operator as Heathfields, who previously traded from the space, decided not to return to the new market hall.

Knutsford Market Hall is open every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am.

If you wish to trade at the market hall you can apply here – https://www.knutsfordtowncouncil.gov.uk/services/market-hall/trade
