Dedication of the Centennial War Memorial

Saturday (6th October) sees the dedication of Knutsford’s Centennial War Memorial. The new war memorial, which is being installed to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I was a project led by Knutsford Town Council working with representatives of the Knutsford Royal British Legion.

The memorial will feature a new roll of honour, researched by volunteers and featuring names missed from existing memorials around Knutsford – including two names of Knutsfordians who gave their lives since the end of the second world war.

The dedication ceremony takes place at 11am on Saturday 6th October in the Knutsford Library Gardens. The ceremony will be led by Rev Phillip Robinson, padre to the Knutsford Royal British Legion and will include students from the Knutsford Academy who will read the roll of honour and two wartime poems.

The new memorial incorporates the statue of Haron Baronian, a private statue commissioned by the Baronian family which once stood in the gardens of the family home on Legh Road – Brae Cottage. In the 1970s the statue was installed in front of the War Memorial Cottage Hospital. Two of Haron’s nephews will be attending the service, having flown from New Zealand specially for the occasion.
